Graveside
services for Rollin Thomas Herald, 92, of Lubbock, will be Thursday,
Dec. 31, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Memorial
services will follow at 2 p.m. at the Neal Chapel located on the
Carillon Campus. Visitation will be Thursday from 12 to 1 p.m. at Rix
Funeral Directors. Mr. Herald died on Dec. 28, 2009.
Rollin
Thomas Herald was born on June 20, 1917 in Lexington, Ky. to Frank and
Emma Herald. He graduated from Texas Tech in Jan. of 1941 with a BA in
Journalism. Rollin was a charter member of the Beta Sigma chapter
(Texas Tech) of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and was an
active alumnus. Rollin married Helenoire Reynolds on Feb. 14, 1942.
They were married for 63 years before her death. Rollin and Helenoire
moved to Grand Prairie after they married, where he worked for North
American Aviation. In 1945, they returned to Lubbock, where they
established Herald Photo, a camera store and photographic services
business from 1946 to 1974, and Custom Photo Services, until his
retirement in 1985. Rollin was a past member of Forrest Heights United
Methodist Church and past chairman of the Administrative Board. He was
also a member of the Hub Movie Club for 35 years, was active in the
Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau, member of
RSVP and a Volunteer driver for Meals-On-Wheels. Rollin was also a
supporter of Friends of the Texas Tech Library and Southwest
Collection, to which he donated most of his negatives. He was a
longtime member of the Lubbock Area Mass Communications Alumni Council
and member of the Golden K Kiwanis club, where he was a two-term
president and treasurer from 1996 - 1998.
Survivors
include his three daughters, Carolyn Arnpriester of Council Bluffs,
Iowa, Susan Gassaway of Midland and Becky Cameron of Plainview; one
sister, Helen Woodard of Beloit, Wis.; four grandsons and numerous
step-grandchildren. Rollin was preceded in death by his wife,
Helenoire; and two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Alexander of San Angelo and
Hildreth Lancaster of State College, Pa.
The family
suggests memorials to the Rollin and Helenoire Herald Scholarship
Endowment Fund for Mass Communication Students at the Texas Tech
Ex-Students Association or to a charity of the giver's choice.
